Bash Guide for Beginners

EBook Description: This guide discusses concepts useful in the daily life of the serious Bash user. While a basic knowledge of shell usage is required, it starts with a discussion of shell building blocks and common practices. Then it presents the grep, awk and sed tools that will later be used to create more interesting examples. The second half of the course is about shell constructs such as loops, conditional tests, functions and traps, and a number of ways to make interactive scripts.

This book is intended as a practical guide to the Linux operating system for those with a moderate amount of technical experience. My intention is to make this book as friendly to the beginning user as possible. If you are already a Unix uber-geek, then this book will likely be boring to you although it has been my experience that many times those who have been using *nix systems for a long time are often less familiar with the available (Graphical User Interface) tools than those who began using those systems after GUI's became commonplace, full-featured, and easy to use.

This document has been revised for the new SE Linux. The old 'Getting Started with SE Linux HOWTO' will remain in place as a legacy document, but it is highly recommened that all new installs of SE Linux use the new SE Linux. The new SE Linux runs on 2.6.x kernels and has also been backported for 2.4.x. This document is largely a duplicate of that for the old SE Linux, with modifications made where necessary.
