EBook Description: This book provides an in-depth examination of gender, sport and sexualities; an analysis of the limitations of liberal feminist responses; and an exploration of radical feminist alternatives. Dr. Lenskyj presents illuminating case studies from Canada, the United States and Australia, with exposes of coaches' and administrators' complicity in perpetuating the chilly climate for female athletes in general, and for lesbians in particular. It includes a content analysis of the mass media treatment of sportswomen, and a discussion of how lesbian characters are portrayed in mainstream and lesbian fiction. Drawing on historical and contemporary examples, Dr. Lenskyj contexualises the homophobia and sexual harassment present in the everyday experiences of significant numbers of women involved in sport and physical activity. She shows that despite three decades of feminist and lesbian activism, and despite the apparent liberalization of attitudes since the 1960s, lesbian sexuality remains largely "in the closet" while heterosexuality continues to be exploited in the name of selling sport. Out on the Field: Gender, Sport and Sexualities will be interesting to the general reader as well as professors and students in the areas of sociology, women's studies, sport, gender diversity, the social sciences, and the humanities.

Heterosexual Masculinities (Psychoanalysis in a New Key Book Series) Book

In recent years there have been substantial changes in approaches to how genders are made and what functions genders fulfill. Most of the scholarly focus in this area has been in the areas of feminist, gay, and lesbian studies, and heterosexual masculinity - which tended to be defined by lack and absence - has not received the critical and scholarly attention these other areas have received.

Amuse Bouche (Russell Quant Mysteries) Book

Anthony Bidulka gives us a gay private investigator, Russell Quant, in the city of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Russell is celebrating his first year as a PI, when a case is dropped in his lap. A man has gone missing on the day of his wedding nuptials to a member of Saskatoon's upper class. This takes Russell on a wild chase through France, and ending up back in Canada, where the case continues to unfold. Refreshingly, unlike most gay fiction, Mr. Bidulka doesn't rely on tons of sex with everyone Russell meets in order to tell his tale. Amuse Bouche has a slightly slow start, while we learn about who Russell is, and how he works, but it pays off in the end. If you can, read this, then A Flight of Aquavit (the next book in the series), and you will get an excellent idea of how Russell works.

Queer America: A GLBT History of the 20th Century Book

Perhaps no topic today is politically more divisive than homosexuality, particularly when it is coupled with the deeply rooted concept of civil rights. This work focuses on 20th/21st- century U. S. history as it pertains to GLBT history. Major issues and events such as the Stonewall riot, Don't Ask, Don't Tell in the military, same-sex marriage, gay rights, gay pride, organizations and alliances, AIDS, and legal battles and court cases are discussed. Also included are sidebars highlighting major debates, legal landmarks and key individuals. A timeline and further reading sections concluding each chapter as well as a full bibliography and black and white images enhance the text.

A Quilted Heart Book

A murder-mystery-ghost-story-romance that manages to subvert all the traps of such genres Daniel MacIvor
When Marsh Cole's body is found in Samson Brindle's pool, who is to blame? Was it suicide, or the vengeful ghost of Sylvian Oulette? From acclaimed poet and playwright R M Vaughan comes the story of three neurotic gay men who fall in love and proceed to torture each other to death -- a twisted fable about love, jealousy, murder, and talking back from the grave.

Family Therapy in Changing Times Second Edition

The new edition of this well-known text addresses the plurality of family life today, and considers the way in which the changeable "theory of family" has influenced the approaches of those working with families. The emphasis in this second edition is on working in a context of cultural diversity and in which life transitions such as marriage, divorce and bereavement, affect the lives of all families, be they multi- or lone-parent, gay or heterosexual. This is an essential text for therapists and counsellors, both in training and in practice, who work with families.

The Marketplace of Christianity (Repost) Book

This startlingly original (and sure to be controversial) account of the evolution of Christianity shows that the economics of religion has little to do with counting the money in the collection basket and much to do with understanding the background of today's religious and political divisions. Since religion is a set of organized beliefs, and a church is an organized body of worshippers, it's natural to use a science that seeks to explain the behavior of organizations--economics--to understand the development of organized religion. The Marketplace of Christianity applies the tools of economic theory to illuminate the emergence of Protestantism in the sixteenth century and to examine contemporary religion-influenced issues, including evolution and gay marriage.

William Shakespeare, Twelfth Night (The New Cambridge Shakespeare, Updated Edition) Book

Edited by Elizabeth Story Donno
Cambridge University Press | 2004 | ISBN: 052153514X | 186 pages | siPDF | 7.5 MB
For this updated edition of Twelfth Night, Penny Gay has written a wholly new Introduction to this well-loved Shakespearean comedy. She stresses the play's theatricality, its elaborate linguistic games and its complex use of Ovidian myths. She analyses the play's delicate balance between romance and realism and its exploration of gender, sexuality and identity. In examining the stage history, Professor Gay suggests that contemporary critical theory could have much to offer twenty-first-century directors and actors. An updated reading list completes the edition.

Counseling Fathers Book

Men do not often come for counseling because they are having difficulties with being a father, but many of the presenting problems and reasons for seeking help can be related to the roles and responsibilities of fathering. The dramatic shift in societal expectations of being a father can often leave men confused as they navigate conflicting views, demands, and responsibilites.

American Buddhism As a Way of Life Book

The United States is becoming more comfortable with Buddhism each year. Celebrity converts, the popularity of the Dalai Lama, a stream of references in popular culture, and mala beads on every third person's wrist all indicate that Buddhism is becoming an accepted part of American life, even if a relatively small percentage of the population actually describes itself as Buddhist. This book investigates the ways in which Buddhist and American ways of life have inflected one another. Gary Storhoff and John Whalen-Bridge have organized this unique collection in accordance with the Buddhist concept of the Three Jewels: the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. "Buddha" discusses two key teachers who popularized Buddhism: Alan Watts and D. T. Suzuki, correlating their personal situations with the approach to spirituality they proclaimed. "Dharma" is concerned with the impact of Buddhist ideas and texts on the most ing social problems faced by Americans, including bioethics, abortion, end-of-life decisions, and identity theft. "Sangha" treats Buddhism in relation to social relationships, with chapters on family life, generational shifts, Asian American communities, the gay/straight divide, and Buddhist artistic practices-such as the making of a Zen garden-used to strengthen communal bonds.
