Acid in the Environment: Lessons Learned and Future Prospects

This book is the result of a conference held biannually at the Goodwin-Niering Center for Conservation Biology and Environmental Studies at Connecticut College. It uses an interdisciplinary approach to focus on important ecological impacts of acid deposition, the transboundary nature of the pollutants that cause acid rain, and domestic and international policies designed to reduce the emission of these pollutants. The book combines research findings and the policy analyses of experts from different academic disciplines with the positions advanced by representatives of various nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Because the volume explores many aspects of the acid rain issue, it will be of interest to a diverse audience that includes researchers, students, concerned citizens, policy analysts, and members of NGOs and government agencies who could use the text as background for discussion pertaining to the science and policy of acid deposition.

"The Cluster Active Archive: Studying the Earth's Space Plasma Environment (Astrophysics and Space Science Proceedings)"

Since the year 2000 the ESA Cluster mission has been investigating the small-scale structures and processes of the Earth's plasma environment, such as those involved in the interaction between the solar wind and the magnetospheric plasma, in global magnetotail dynamics, in cross-tail currents, and in the formation and dynamics of the neutral line and of plasmoids.

This book contains presentations made at the 15th Cluster workshop held in March 2008. It also presents several articles about the Cluster Active Archive and its datasets, a few overview papers on the Cluster mission, and articles reporting on scientific findings on the solar wind, the magnetosheath, the magnetopause and the magnetotail.

Renewable Energy and the Environment

Drawing on the authors extensive research and project implementation around the globe, Solar Energy: Renewable Energy and the Environment covers solar energy resources, thermal and photovoltaic systems, and the economics involved in using solar energy. It provides background theory on solar energy as well as useful technical information for implementing solar energy applications.

The book details the strengths, weaknesses, and applications of solar power generation technologies. It discusses the design and implementation of often-overlooked solar technologies, such as solar water pumping, distillation, detoxification, refrigeration, and village power. The text also examines photovoltaic power and how it is best suited for remote-site applications with small to moderate power requirements. Examples, real-world case studies, and lessons learned from technical failures illustrate how to best implement solar energy projects.

The time for clean energy solutions is here. Only through energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies can modern civilization extricate itself from the gathering "perfect energy storm." Focusing on one of the keys to lessen the potentially harmful impacts of the storm, this book discusses how to increase energy production from a clean energy sourcethe sun.

Energy and the Environment

In an age of mounting energy crises, James A. Fay and Dan S. Golombs Energy and the Environment offers a timely treatment of a critical problem in urban-industrial societies: the worldwide growth of energy use and the destructive relationship between this energy use and environmental degradation. This comprehensive text provides the scientific and technological background for understanding how our ever-increasing use of energy threatens the natural environment at local, regional, and global scales and how this threat could be mitigated by more efficient use of conventional energy sources and their replacement by renewable energy sources. Designed for upper-level undergraduate and first-year graduate students, Energy and the Environment is essential reading for students and professionals in energy and environmental sciences and technology.

Effective C++ in an Embedded Environment

C++s flexibility, modelling power, support for object-oriented and generic programming, and extensive tool set, make it attractive for embedded projects, but some developers worry about code bloat and hidden performance penalties. This seminar begins by confronting those issues directly, then moves on to demonstrate how C++ can improve the correctness, readability, and efficiency of embedded software, in some cases accomplishing what is literally impossible in C.

The HP Virtual Server Environment:

Praise for The HP Virtual Server Environment "This book will educate professionals about the components of a virtual server environment and how to manage them in everyday tasks. It demonstrates how to manage resource utilization in real time and to its full capacity. Bryan and Dan are fully qualified to write this book, having been involved in creating and designing a number of the virtual server environment components." --D'Ann Chorak, Software Engineering Project Manager "Great overviews, technology details, and practical example details." --George Williams, Solution Architect, Hewlett-Packard Co. "From a customer standpoint, almost anyone can make use of the solutions and concepts portrayed in The HP Virtual Server Environment. Some of the solutions are free, so there are ways to take advantage at no cost. No matter what solution is used, the results are a win-win situation for the customer." --Alan Hymes, Solution Architect, Hewlett-Packard Co. "The material is well-written. The book will appeal to high-end enterprise system administrators and architects who are interested in implementing an 'Adaptive Enterprise' environment or in improving an existing environment."
