EBook Description: Thermodynamics is an essential subject taught to all science and engineering students. If the coverage of this subject is restricted to theoretical analysis, students will resort to memorising the facts in order to pass the examination. Therefore, this book is set out with the aim to present this subject from an angle of demonstration of how these laws are used in practical situation. This book is designed for the virtual reader in mind, it is concise and easy to read, yet it presents all the basic laws of thermodynamics in a simplistic and straightforward manner; plus many worked examples and a good section of unsolved tutorial problems.

Digital Image Processing: Part I

This book (vol.1 and vol.2) introduces the fundamental theories of modern digital image processing including intensity transformations, filtering in the frequency and spatial domain, restoration, colour processing, morphological operations, and segmentation. It aims to help the students, scientists, and practitioners to understand the concepts through illustrations and examples

Electrical Power

The book defines the units of electrical quantities from first principles. Methods are demonstrated for calculating voltage, current, power, impedances and magnetic forces in dc and ac circuits and in machines and other electrical plant. The vector representation of ac quantities is explained. Typical arrangements of electrical power networks are described. Methods for calculating fault currents and for the automatic isolation of faulty equipment are described.

Introduction to Electronic Engineering

This work introduces a reader to the basics of electronic engineering. The book is recommended for those who study electronics. Here, students may get their first knowledge of electronic concepts and basic components. Emphasis is on the devices used in day-to-day consumer electronic products. Therefore, semiconductor components diodes, transistors, and thyristors are discussed in the first step. Next, the most common electronic circuits, such as analogue, differential and operation amplifiers, suppliers and references, filters, math converters, pulsers, logical gates, etc. are covered.

Introduction to Power Electronics

Power Electronics is the technology associated with efficient conversion, control and conditioning of electric power from its available input into the desired electrical output form. The field of the book is concerned of electrical power processing using electronic devices the key component of which is a switching power converter.

Introduction to Digital Signal and System Analysis

As marching into the digital era, many people in different sectors are quite keen to understand why this has happened. They hope to obtain basic principles about digital signals and associated digital systems. Instead of targeting advanced or expert level, they often hope to grasp the subject as efficient and effective as possible without undertaking impossible task under usually limited time and effort available. This book is written for those beginners who want to gain an overview of the topic, understand the basic methods and know how to deal with basic digital signals and systems.

Biological Signal Analysis

This textbook will provide the reader with an understanding of biological signals and digital signal analysis techniques such as conditioning, filtering, feature extraction, classification and statistical validation for solving practical biological signal analysis problems using MATLAB.

Digital Image Processing: Part II

This book (vol.1 and vol.2) introduces the fundamental theories of modern digital image processing including intensity transformations, filtering in the frequency and spatial domain, restoration, colour processing, morphological operations, and segmentation. It aims to help the students, scientists, and practitioners to understand the concepts through illustrations and examples

Electromagnetism

This is a companion volume to Electromagnetism for Electronic Engineers (3rd edn.) (Ventus, 2009). It contains the worked examples, together with worked solutions to the end of chapter examples, which featured in the previous edition of the book. I have discovered and corrected a number of mistakes in the previous edition.

I hope that students will find these 88 worked examples helpful in illustrating how the fundamental laws of electromagnetism can be applied to a range of problems. I have maintained the emphasis on examples which may be of practical value and on the assumptions and approximations which are needed. In many cases the purpose of the calculations is to find the circuit properties of a component so that the link between the complementary circuit and field descriptions of a problem are illustrated.

Introductory Finite Difference Methods for PDEs

This book presents finite difference methods for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) and also general concepts like stability, boundary conditions etc. Material is in order of increasing complexity (from elliptic PDEs to hyperbolic systems) with related theory included in appendices. Each chapter has written and computer exercises with web links to worked solutions, programs, A/V presentations and case studies. Emphasis is on the practical and students are encouraged to do numerical experiments. This book is intended for undergraduates who know Calculus and introductory programming.

An Introduction to Nonlinearity in Control Systems

The book is concerned with the effects of nonlinearity in feedback control systems and techniques which can be used to design feedback loops containing nonlinear elements. After a short introductory chapter on nonlinearity and its possible effects the use of phase plane methods for nonlinear second order systems is discussed. The next three chapters cover the describing function method and its applications in the determination of limit cycles, stability analysis and the prediction of unique nonlinear behaviour such as jump resonance and subharmonic generation. The following chapter shows using the Tsypkin approach how in feedback loops with a relay nonlinearity any limit cycles and their stability can be found exactly. Examples are given which cover some unique forms of limit cycles such as limit cycles with a sliding mode and multipulse limit cycles, which can be caused by resonant plant transfer functions. In recent years with the advent of microprocessor controllers there has been considerable interest in techniques for controller tuning based on limit cycle data and this is the topic covered in the next chapter. The analyses used make use of both the describing function method and the Tsypkin method presented in the previous chapters. The next topic covered is absolute stability methods for a nonlinear feedback loop with a single nonlinearity with emphasis placed on frequency domain methods to allow comparison with describing function results. The final chapter covers some methods for the design of nonlinear systems. The material is of an introductory nature but hopefully gives an overview and provides a basic understanding of various topics, many developed in recent years, and several of which have entire textbooks devoted to them.
