EBook Description: Oxford University Press | 2009 | ISBN: 0199545669 | Pages: 304 | PDF | 7.94 MB
This is the first book to collate and synthesize the recent burgeoning primary research literature on dog behaviour, evolution, and cognition. The author presents a new ecological approach to the understanding of dog behaviour, demonstrating how dogs can be the subject of rigorous and productive scientific study without the need to confine them to a laboratory environment.
Dog Behaviour, Evolution, and Cognition starts with an overview of the conceptual and methodological issues associated with the study of the dog, followed by a brief description of their role in human society-almost a third of human families share their daily life with the dog! An evolutionary perspective is then introduced with a summary of current research into the process of domestication. The central part of the book is devoted to issues relating to the cognitive aspects of behaviour which have received particular attention in recent years from both psychologists and ethologists. The book's final chapters introduce the reader to many novel approaches to dog behaviour, set in the context of behavioural development and genetics.
Directions for future research are highlighted throughout the text which also incorporates links to human and primate research by drawing on homologies and analogies in both evolution and behaviour. The book will therefore be of relevance and use to anyone with an interest in behavioural ecology including graduate students of animal behaviour and cognition.

Dogs All-in-One For Dummies ISBN: 0470529784
Welcome to Dogs All-in-One For Dummies! This book is just what the title implies: a soup-to-nuts reference on all things dog. Dog health, dog training not to mention dog gear, dog grooming, dog breeds and breeding, even dog sports. Whether youre looking to adopt a dog, trying to improve your relationship with one you have, or trying to come up with fun things to do with your furry pal, this book contains something for you.
No other animal has had such a long and close relationship with humans. Wolves started becoming domesticated some 15,000 years ago, by some estimates, and spread all over the world. They helped protect early human settlements, they were with the ancient Romans and Greeks and Egyptians in their glory days, and they may have even accompanied the first migration from Siberia across the Bering Strait into North America.
Dogs have always had jobs to do. Whether it was herding other animals, helping hunters and fishermen earn their living, going to war, protecting royalty, keeping communities rodent free, or pulling sleds, dogs have earned their place in history and in the hearts of animal lovers everywhere. Thousands of years of breeding to do those different kinds of work have shaped the sometimes wildly different bodies and personalities of hundreds of breeds.
Theyve come a long way from their gray wolf ancestors, who were attracted to campfires and hoping for a handout.
Nowadays dogs are mainly companions. Its this slight discrepancy between what dogs think we still want them to do what we bred them to do for so long and what we actually want them to do now that is the source of much misunderstanding between the canine and human worlds. This book aims to correct some of that by helping you see things from the dogs point of view.

The Ecology of Stray Dogs: A Study of Free-Ranging Urban Animals
This study of dog ecology (and behaviour) and of human ecology (and behaviour) discusses the facets of the phenomenon of the urban free-roaming dog. It provides information for students who wish to embark on studies of wild canines. This book was first published in 1973. It is rather brief, but very informative. I can't believe a more recent study has not been undertaken. I think one should be. I would like alot more detail about the lives these poor dogs lead. I read every book associated with Alan Beck, Arnold Arluke, Clinton Sanders, Lockwood, Ascione, and Arkow. The work they do about animals and people is so important! Seek out these authors for more about animals and people.
